Renewed call for new access to London Gateway superport

A RENEWED call has gone out for the government to think again about access to Thurrock's new superport.

Stephen Metcalfe, the Conservative candidate for South Basildon & East Thurrock at the next general election, has echoed pleas for a second access road to the £1.5 billion development at Coryton.

He has expressed deep concern over local transport infrastructure after the Department of Transport issued a Harbour Empowerment Order, giving the final seal of approval for work to start on the new London Gateway development.

Construction work at the 1,850 acre site could start later this year with the port's first berth expected to open by 2011.

As part of the deal to win Government approval, Dubai based DP World, the company behind the London Gateway port, has pledged £100 million to be spent on improving local road networks.

Improvements include:

  • Installing noise barriers
  • Resurfacing The Manorway from Corringham to Stanford-le-Hope with low-noise tarmac
  • Moving the Sorrells roundabout away from nearby homes
  • Widening the A13 and improving the junction with the M25

Mr Metcalfe said: "I welcome the measures that have been put in place, but I am still disappointed that no new roads are planned to the London Gateway port and business park. The Government needs to ensure adequate road and rail infrastructure is in place to cope with the massive increase in traffic when the port is fully open and running."

"The need for a second access route was first called for by the Shell Haven Project Action Committee but firmly rejected by the Government planning enquiry.

"I have met with local and county councillors and have been meeting and listening to people on the doorstep. I have also met with SPEAC and heard their frustration about the lack of proper access to the site and the effect it will have on surrounding areas.

"I would like to see a second access route put firmly back onto the political agenda.

"We already have the tanker traffic to and from the refinery at Coryton and when the port is completed the site generate thousands of lorry movements a day along the Manorway, let alone the additional traffic from the port employees.

"I am concerned that the pollution, noise and fumes will be intolerable for local residents and want to see more done to help them."

How about not building the port in the first place.
Did we vote for it?? no.
Did we ask for our area to be made a industrial town? no.

This port will be the death of of area of Thurrock.

Last one out turn the lights off.

I am appalled that NO ONE has LISTENED to SPEAC for example…the Government just aren't GETTING IT!!!

It is ESSENTIAL there is another road to the port...if there is ever going to be any kind of acceptance for this port by local residents - a new road will be the driver. However I am not stupid everything is done on the cheap and to hell with us!

I certainly don’t want a load of concrete outside my house with supposed 'wall art' (AKA graffiti) all over it! They are out of their tiny little minds if they think this will have any effect on reducing the noise that 60,000+ vehicle movement’s right outside your front door will make!

I have NO faith in the TTGDC (who want to stick 1000’s of wooden shacks in Stanford and Corringham! The mind of a sane person boggles!) Equally I have NO FAITH WHATSOEVER in each and every one of our so called Government (or should that be DICTATORSHIP!) I know for sure they wouldn’t like a load of graffiti concrete outside their front doors!!!

I have of course resigned myself to the fact that Corringham and Stanford is to become the Illegal Immigrant Capital of the world and living here will BURST YOUR EAR DRUMS (A GOVERNMENT HEALTH WARNING WILL BE SLAPPED ON CORRINGHAM AND STANFORD) but for one split second I thought we would have someone (our own MP for example would have helped US. ..? I hope you are clearing your desk Angela!) on residents' side who spoke sense and said - yes they need a new road to the site because this will be MASSIVE and much more for residents to live with than Tilbury has to contend with. BUT Oh NO...it's not to be...will the Government now buy our homes so we can get the hell out of here?

Let’s face it they will need our homes for all the Illegal Immigrants that will just so happen get to the UK! (Another route into the World’s DUMPING GROUND (the UK)). I will NEVER vote Labour and I lay the blame completely on their shoulders - thank you for giving us an unelected fiasco who don’t have the ability to listen and certainly do NOT have the sense they were born with! And thank you to you the Labour Government, who are so far removed from reality you don’t know when you have all OUTSTAYED your welcome!

I think it will fit in nicely with the extra 18,500 flats, sorry "homes" they want to build.

I thought they were talking about another route coming off Mucking somewhere leading traffic away from the Manorway? I also read that they were talking once again about another road off Canvey ie via the Manorway. This would have a huge impact on the roads in SLH. Something needs to be done but let's hope the 'right' decisions are made for the people living in and around this Super-port.

This all reminds me of the endless meetings held in a so called Cory Town meeting hall in the mid fithties when Thurrock Council warned us that if the road to Shell was not improved and taken away from the houses close to Giffards Cross Road then safety for homes/community and all round life in general would be seriously curtail this area in the future.
Was the plans shelved then? No! Do you really think Thurrock Council has learned from that or indeed, listened? Why should they. Cory Town was swallowed up. What next, Corringham?

funny how a strong story like this has fallen off the main part of the website, some days a headline can stay a headline for days?

Not sure when but this subject was touched upon a few weeks ago because Councillor Ian Harrison was concerned about the possibility of linking up the manorway with Canvey. This was due to a story regarding access off the island.
I still wonder how much thought (or lack of) was given to the existing roads in and around S-L-H. With all the extra traffic coming to the area - how is the manorway going to cope? If there's ever an accident just on or around the roundabout going onto the A13, its an absolute nightmare. The road is still busy with the tankers and traffic from the main refinery part - it was even more so when Shell was up and running. Sadly all that will happen, is that drivers will be forced to find other routes until this problem is properly addressed.

As the previous post mentioned, the Manorway and A13 go into meltdown as soon as there is an accident, what do these people in power think is going to happen when the port traffic starts?
Does this seal of approval extend to DP World being given access to their preferred emergency routes of Corringham Rd and Lampits Hill when the Manorway is blocked in spite of the weight restrictions on them I wonder?
What a nightmare we have coming.

I'm dreading the increase in the traffic when DP Superport is up and running - I'm thinking of buying gas masks for my kids so that they can play in Hardie Park without breathing in loads of toxic fumes.
Our doctors are going to be over run with an increase in breathing problem not just from the young but the elderly too. -
I off to buy the whole family gas masks.

Not being from the immediate area I don’t know what pressure groups you’ve got down there in the Corringham/Stanford area but, as a long shot, why don’t you try approaching the Dubai government to intervene. In the current political climate (Muslims v rest of the world) they may be looking to keep the West sweet, and asking one of their national companies to tone it down a bit may just be a little piece of entente cordiale they are looking for. It’s only an outside chance but as the SAS motto says, “Who dares, wins”!
