A GRADE II listed barn at St Cleres Hall in Stanford-le-Hope is to be demolished.

The go ahead for the demolition was given at a Thames Gateway Development Corporation planning committee meeting today, on officer recommendation.

The barn in question has not had a roof or trusses for some time, and the lower frame is exposed to the elements.

Planning officer Kirsty Towler said: "The timbers are decayed, rotten and unusable.

"There is realistically no other alternative than to demolish it."

With the skeleton of the barn continuing to collapse the committee agreed it could not be saved.

Development Corporation Chairman William Mckee said: "This is a fairly open and shut case, we have to agree this."

No shock there then.
It seems to be a bit of a theme in Thurrock with old buildings that get plans turned down, If they are old we just let them rote till they can not be fixed and or the just seem to burn down on their own then knock down and build some ugly building........oh well lets hope that some of the barn can be saved for our history.

It is rather sad. There aren't many buildings like this left in this part of Essex. Shame the National Lottery funding couldn't have helped keep this building - who pays for the demolition? or maybe it was allowed to rot because planning permission wasn't granted for a swankey new dwelling?
