A 43-year-old factory worker from Grays has been jailed for four years for dishonestly obtaining more than £80,000 through fraudulent tax credit claims.

Anthony Aikulola, who has dual British and Nigerian nationality, used more than 50 different bank accounts in an attempt to disguise his illegal operation.

In passing sentence, His Honour Judge Overbury commented: "You played an active role in an extensive fraud.

"It is plain others were involved but also that the person benefiting from the fraud was one of the principal offenders. The jury convicted you on the clearest evidence. Your sole motivation was self enrichment at the cost of the state.

"It was a sophisticated fraud, the proceeds were quickly dissipated to your family or by cars being purchased. The identities of innocent members of the public were used meaning that for a time they were under suspicion which caused distress and embarrassment to them."

After the trial Timothy Atkins Senior Investigating Officer from HM Revenue & Customs said: "This case is the result of many months of intense and thorough work by a dedicated team of tax credit investigation officers, determined to see that this fraudster was brought to justice.

"The vast majority of tax credit claimants are honest and claim only what they are entitled to.

"But those who think that they can beat the system and gain advantage over everyone else without consideration or second thought should be worried.

"We will not hesitate to pursue those who commit this type of offence so that they can be effectively prosecuted by the Revenue and Customs Prosecutions Office."

The court heard that revenue officers began an 18 month investigation into Aikulola's affairs after noticing discrepancies in his tax credit claims.

This culminated in an unannounced visit by investigators accompanied by officers from Essex police to Aikulola's home on April 10, 2006.

When the house was searched, a large quantity of financial documents and two laptop computers were found and removed for further examination.

Aikulola, a married man with three children, was arrested on suspicion of fraud and money laundering and later released on bail.

During the course of the investigation officers discovered that Aikulola had made false claims to tax credits totalling £81,560.61 which were paid into 51 different bank accounts.

Aikulola had been found guilty on six counts of money laundering on April 3, 2008 and was remanded in custody until appearing for sentence.

The Revenue & Customs Prosecutions Office, an independent prosecuting authority that reports to the Attorney General who prosecuted the case, will be seeking to recover assets from the defendant and a confiscation hearing has been set for September 15.

Just because he has a dual passport it doesn't make him British. Its probably a fake anyway.

Why has no one asked what a Nigerian national is doing claiming any form of state benefits. Every time somone even hints that this country is a soft touch, they're racist.

Go to Nigeria, an oil rich nation and see how many state benefits you would be entitled to.

Wait a moment, state benfits don't exist in Nigeria. I wonder why so many Nigerians decide to make it all the way to Britain Hmmm?!!

So an 18 mth investigation - how much has this cost? I'm not having a dig -in fact well done to the investigators - but how much of the £80k will be recovered? and now this person has been jailed, will his wife be able to work to support herself - or will she still be able to claim benefits. And what of the cars and other items purchased, can they be recovered and sold off? This man was obviously very clever to do this - but are we as a country, that easy to fiddle? I've always worked since leaving school at 16 as have my family. Yes we're fortunate but it does annoy me when I read stories like this. It's not fair on those who genuinely need help. I hope this mans family do NOT continue to milk the system!

It is fraudsters like this that mean there is not enough in the public purse to pay for things like care for the elderly in England. I am sure that they will not lose any sleep over it as they think it is a victimless crime. Well they are wrong the victims are us the tax payer and all those who TRUELY need state help

We have thousands of law breakers in this country, so what's the problem of letting in a few hundred thousand more.

Everyone had the chance to vote out councillors who are slack and racist, but people seam to accept a corrupt high tax criminal multicultural sociality, were local creating a sociality with no future for their kids, who will have no houses or jobs so only thing left is a gang and maybe soon a gun to play with, that's better to locals than being branded a racist and anyway the immigrants pay the taxes, they deserve the jobs and houses rather than our own kids because we are told every day every one else from around the world are better than us at everything. We are the scum of the world and 78% of the electorate voted an agreement. The 22% who have seen the light may have to do the white flight.

What an absolute JOKE! And I agree witth spartacus - if you are a white British person (and contrary to popular belief that isnt racist!) you are in the minority. And why would you want to visit Grays? Half the shops there dont cater for white British people! Actually it is beyond a joke; it can only happen in England!!! I dont feel like I am in the minority in this country...as a white english person I AM IN THE MINORITY! Have I got issues about that? HELL YEAH!

In a national newspaper today there is a story of how the department for work and pensions has knowingly issued tens of thousands of national insurance numbers to illegal immigrants thus enabling them to work.

The official reason behind this was to "control benefit fraud". So not only has this failed in it's aim, it has also broken the law of the land by intentionally giving national insurance numbers to known illegal immigrants.

If this was done by an individual employee of the DWP under the counter for personal gain, the government would probably have made an example of that individual and held them up as another example of this government being tough on immigration.

But because this was government policy a statement was released on Friday evening to the commons after virtually all MP's had gone.

Yet another great example of what this government is really all about.

I have heard that one of the African hairdressers in Grays had a sign in the window stating 'No whites'? Is this racist? I doubt it as only white people are racist.

I'm sure they're not racist, it's just another example of them trying to integrate with the local community. Social cohesion and all that sort of thing the government is so hell bent on indoctrinating councils with.

Another interesting piece from the government on immigration and the tensions it has now admitted it causes in local communities.

Hazel Blears made a statement saying councils should be more pro active in recognising tensions within communities that had witnessed large scale immigration and have plans to deal with it.

In that statement she said that she realised that there were tensions between recent arrivals and the "LONGER TERM RESIDENTS".

Does she mean people born in this country. Does she mean english people with generations of family in this country.

Next Time you're on holiday abroad and somone asks you which country you're from, tell them that you have no nationality, you are simply a long term resident of England.

Another attempt by the Labour party to air brush the English nationality out of existense. How have we neded up with a government that so hates the very being of the people it is supposed to be here to represent.

Again people had the chance to vote out the incompetence , but they replaced them with more incompedance.I think locals either want gangs and ghettos or are scared to be branded racist. they would rather put their children at risk than be called a racist. It will only get worse around here now the conservatives got control and the ones who snobbishly keep voting for them will be the first to bugger off after they have helped to turn thurrock into ghetto Africa, so selfish.

I think you should ask Hazel Blears whou "our own" are Mr Public as according to her we're merely longer term residents.

While your there you could ask Mr Hutton for a few extra N.I. numbers, they're giving them out like confetti to anyone who asks, I'm sure a few more won't hurt.
