Doors boost for Coalhouse Fort

A THURROCK blacksmiths has created a set of steel doors for Coalhouse Fort, the first of their kind made for more than 100 years.

A.Theobald and Son the blacksmith at Linford have constructed and fitted a set of gunport doors as part of the replica Victorian operational gun emplacement that has been funded from a grant by RWEnpower (Tilbury Power Station).

Their design was copied from remnants at New Tavern Fort.

The fort has also been enhanced by the donation by S. Walsh & Sons, gravel distributors at East Tilbury of more than 20 tons of stone gravel for the preservation of the parade ground area. This necessitated the fort volunteer working group being very busy spreading the stones and has thus improved the area for future displays on the public open days.

The fort is always in need of new adult volunteers with any or no special skills to assist on open days and the regular Wednesday work parties to maintain this very important Thurrock historical military site for the future generations.

For open day details and what is happening at the fort visit www.coalhousefort.co.uk
