Young Tory topples Labour strong man
 |
| MOMENT OF TRUTH: The verdict is delivered to Gordon Gambier and his young opponent. |
PERHAPS the evening's biggest shock came in the second-to-last declared result when young Conservative Danny Nicklen ousted labour stalwart Gordon Gambier.
The former borough youth MP was backed by a well-oiled election machine that took the lion's share of one of the day's biggest turnouts.
The ambitious young Tory, whose declared aim is to be an MP, polled more than 1,000 votes.
He said: ""I'd like to say a huge thank you to all the people who worked so hard trudging the streets with me and I'd also like to thank the people of Stanford East and Corringham Town for giving me a chance."
Mr Gambier was in a sombre mood afterwards, but sportingly congratulated his young opponent, sayiong: "I'd like to say that it has been a fair fight, I'd also like to congratulate Danny Nicklen. He won it fair and square.
"Can I take this opportunity to thank all my supporters, I am sorry I let you all down but I did do my very best.
"I have enjoyed the last four years as your representative and will miss the chalenges you gave me.
"I have made many friends in those years and appreciated your support. We laughed together and I will not forget you. C'est la vie."
When asked if he would stand again he said: "Who knows?"
Result:
Danny Nicklen (Con)1,069
Gordon Gambier (Lab) 949
Danny Brown (BNP)344
Dave Amis (Ind Working Class Assn) 98
Maj 120
Con gain from Labour
Turnout 38%

I like to say how sorry i am to see Gordon Gambier going after last night results.
He has done so much in my area, from getting the No11 bus running well to geting the fence put up around the childrens park in Corringham.
he will be missed and i hope he will stand agin.
Thanks Mr Gambier you have served us well.

Whilst i'm not into politics, it's refreshing to see a 'young' man wanting to stand in the local elections - good luck to him. However, I hope he continues to build on the good work that Mr Gambier has started.

It's surprising though, and I am still glad that I did not vote, that Danny was not even there to meet and greet his prospective constituates. Some conservative hawker was there instead who seemed to me, to be very pushey in finding out who people had voted for. Not how I would have wanted things, or expect from thy Conservative's.

I must assume that as you did note vote that you had no reason to go anywhere near the Polling station.
Danny was at my Polling Station when I voted, and he was more than willing to talk, and the "Conservative Hawker" was actually quite pleasant when asking for my registration number, and he didn't ask how I voted. Wouldn't have told him anyway.
I wish Danny every success, and more power to him for getting involved at a young age.

You don't have to tell me twice, push button only once. I was there at the Conservative Hawkers O'Donohue camp and the guy was like a fly buzzing around me. Very unprofessional for a Conservative. I was there early afternoon and the Labour candidate had the good sense to canvas outside the pharmacy in Corringham.
