On-line library launched
THURROCK people with internet access can now "go to the library" from the comfort of their own home.
People are not confined to borrowing just what is on the shelves - by using the Essex Libraries Automated Network or ELAN system, at the touch of a button, Thurrock residents have access to over three million items across Essex.
ELAN can also be accessed at the free internet-connected computers available in all of Thurrock's libraries.
Councillor Gareth Davies, Thurrock's Cabinet member for Culture, said: "You can use ELAN via the internet or at the public computers in any Thurrock library.
"Better than that, you can join the library on-line and even get an automated message to your telephone or mobile telling you your item has arrived in the library."
ELAN is a computer network that links libraries across the county and catalogues over three million items held by Thurrock, Southend and Essex library services.
The search facility enables residents to locate an item, by title, author subject or material type.
When the item is found, it can be reserved it or - if you are at a library - a member of staff can do it for you.
This is a free service and when your chosen item is available it can be delivered to the library of your choice for you to collect.

Is this really NEWS? I have been using the Elan system for years, or is it that since our libraries are now run by Thurrock and not Essex County that the service has suffered a decline in the number of borrowers!

News to me! I didn't realise you could do this - time to dig out me Southend Library pass!
Anything to encourage more people to use the library service should be welcomed.
As the old saying goes if you don't use it lose it.

I agree with Bill.........I have been using ELAN online for many years, so why is it "suddenly" available ???
