Thurrock Hospital charity folds after 30 years

A PATIENTS' charity has folded after more than 30 years of fundraising.

Thurrock Hospital Association has worked to improve the quality of life for patients at Thurrock Community Hospital, Long Lane, Grays.

Closure came after dwindling membership and a reduced need for the mini-bus service provided by the charity.

A closing ceremony was held at the hospital, where remaining funds of £2,000 were distributed to wards and daycare units.

Treasurer Reg Tokley, 91, said: "I am sad we are closing down. We've had some real good support and I'm very proud."

The Rev Gwyn Thomas, 89, vice-chairman and Hospital Chaplin, added: "We're all sad about it, but we did what we could while the need existed."

Mr Tokley became treasurer when the association formed in 1977 after a sister at the Thurrock Hospital thought patients would benefit from going on mini bus outings. A fete was organised to raise £200 towards a mini bus, but the target was beaten and £1,000 was gathered.

To save the money, fundraisers approached the Thurrock Darts League who agreed to open a new account called the mini bus fund.

Two-and-a-half years later the fund had reached £9,000 and a Ford Transit complete with conversion for five wheelchairs was bought.

The committee then changed its name to the Thurrock Hospital Association and registered as a charity.

With the support of voluntary drivers and helpers the association purchased two more mini buses, using them to take patients on shopping trips, excursions and make sure they arrived at hospital appointments.

The £2,000 was divided between the Meadowview and Mayfield units, the Jubilee Day Hospital, the Alistair Farquharson Unit and the John Tallack Centre.
